About the history of the monastery: The first archaeological evidence of medieval life in this place is a tomb with some coins and decorations of the era of the Byzantine emperor Michael VIII Palaeologus (1259-1282). Some other items also dating from the 13th century, while the marble frieze above the middle door of the church dates from the 13th or 14th century. A couple of new buildings were built in the monastery at the time of the Despot Alexius Slav. The oldest source proving the existence of the monastery is a note on a book of songs of 1551, today in the library of the Great Lavra on Mount Athos.
The monastery church was built before the 15th century and painted in 1597, some of the frescoes are preserved. In 1611 she painted the facade of the south. Rojen Monastery was devastated by a fire between 1662 and 1674, emphasizes the destruction of the library, seriously damaging most buildings. The monastery was restored in the next century with the financial support of wealthy Bulgarians from all over the country. Reconstruction began in 1715 and was largely completed in 1732.
The monastery reached its apogee in the 19th century when it was a regional center of Orthodox Christian and owner of much land in the area. The tomb of the famous revolutionary of Bulgaria - Yane Sandanski is situated near the monastery.
