Itinerary - Bulgaria tour: Nature and Legends

 
Day 1: Sofia - Karlovo
Arrival at Sofia airport. Meet and greet by your personal guide. Transfer to the town of Karlovo. Visit the historical museum. Hotel check in and overnight.

Day 2: Karlovo
After breakfast we will visit several waterfalls in the area – Kademliisko Praskalo and Babsko Praskalo. After that we will return in Karlovo for relaxing evening after our first trail on this tour. Overnight in Karlovo.

Day 3: Karlovo -  Krushuna Waterfalls – Devetashka Cave – Veliko Turnovo
After breakfast, we will visit the Krushuna Waterfalls, famous with their picturesque landscape and are formed by many travertines. Continue with the cave, situated nearby – Devetshka Cave, which has been continuously occupied by Paleo humans for tens of thousands of years, served as a shelter for various faunal species during extensive periods and now is home to nearly 30,000 bats. Afterwards, we will depart for Veliko Turnovo. Evening city tour including the Tsarevets Forthres and the old town. Overnight in Veliko Turnovo.

Day 4: Veliko Turnovo – Hotnitsa Waterfalls – Ruse
Breakfast. In the morning we will continue our journey with Hotnitsa waterfalls, a gorgeous waterfall near the village of Hotnitsa and proceed to Ruse and Orlova chuka cave, the second longest cave in the country. Free evening in Ruse. Overnight.

Day 5: Ruse – Silistra
After breakfast we will continue to another Danube city, Silistra. City tour including Dorustorum Fortress,  Majidi Tabia Fortress and Danube Garden. Overnight in Silistra.

Day 6: Silistra – Varna
Breakfast. Early in the morning we will leave our hotel for some birdwatching in the Srebarna Nature Reserve. After that we will continue to Varna. We‘ll visit The Planetarium, The Naval Museum of Varna and the Retro museum and the pedestrian area. Overnight.

Day 7: Varna
After breakfast will see the massive flocks of gees, taking off at dawn, spreading over the field’s westwards. In the afternoon we will be checking the wetlands for other waterfowl and seabirds, waiting for the sunset, when the gees will start coming back. Overnight in Varna.

Day 8: Varna – Provadia – Sliven 
After breakfast we will head back to the heart of the country for a visit to Medieval Fortress Ovech, located east of the present town of Provadia on a plateau above the city, named "Kaleto". Spend some time there and enjoy the magnificent panorama. After that continue to Sliven, where we will visit the Sinite Kamuni reserve, situated above the city. Sinite Kamani Natural Park has 6 natural landmarks and we will visit Halkata (The ring) which is the most famous one. Overnight in Sliven.

Day 9: Sliven - Stara Zagora
After breakfast we will continue to the city of linden, Stara Zagora. We will have some relaxing day – visit the pedestrian area and the famous park in the city “Ayazmoto” (The Spring). The Ayazmoto is one of the highest points of the city and part of the mountainous part of Sarnena Gora. The legend says that Knyaz Boris I that accepted Christianity there during the First Bulgarian Empire. Overnight in Stara Zagora.

Day 10: Stara Zagora – Kurdzali – Zlatograd
After breakfast we will depart for Kurdzali to visit the Medieval Archaeological Complex Perperikon, one of the most ancient monumental megalithic structures, entirely carved into the rocks. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Bulgaria. But our first stop for today we’ll be the Stone Mushrooms. According to a legend, the charcoal-burner Raduil lived in the Perperikon fortress with his four beautiful daughters. One morning they went outside the town walls to bring water and saw a great horde of invaders at the hill near the river. Many men were killed in the battle, most of the women were captured and the daughters of Raduil were among them. The leader took a look at them and choose the most beautiful ones for him and to sell the others as slaves. They runaway but the closest friend of the leader caught them, lashed out with his yataghan and cut off their heads. As they fell on the ground, they turned into a stone mushrooms. Continue to Zlatograd for overnight.

Day 11: Zlatograd – Smolyan
Breakfast. Morning walk through the Ethnographic open-air museum which is also part of the everyday life of local people. You will have the chance to see the ethnographic museum, workshops and an exhibition of water equipment. Continue to Smolyan where we will spend the night.

Day 12: Smolyan – Chepelare – Asenovgrad – Plovdiv
After breakfast we will have city tour including the Art gallery, the Ali-bey konak, the Pangalov house and the Mednikar bazaar. After that we will continue to Chepelare, a popular winter resort with one of the longest ski runs in Southeastern Europe. Short walk and continue to The Marvelous Bridges. A legend says that many years ago, there were a lot of shepherds in the locality of the village of Zabardo. A dragon appeared from somewhere and began to ravage their herds. For many years the shepherds suffered from the dragon’s raids. Finally, they came up with a way to outwit him. They loaded a donkey with tinder, set it on fire and sent it against the dragon. The dragon swallowed the donkey together with the tinder which was burning slowly but surely. The dragon went crazy and desperately tried to escape, and finally found a small hole in the ground. Its huge body opened the crack. Years later, when the dragon bones decomposed, the large arched bridges remained. Continue with a visit to Asen’s Fortress in Asenovgrad. Our day will end in Plovdiv.

Day 13: Plovdiv – Sofia
In the morning we will have exploring tour of the Plovdiv Old Town, the Roman theatre and the emblematic Kapana district. After lunch we will continue to Sofia. Overnight.

Days 14: Sofia departure
Breakfast. Free time till the transfer to the airport. End of our services.
