Itinerary - Bulgarian Mountains Tour + Birdwatching

 
Day 1: Sofia
Arrival at Sofia Airport. Transfer to the hotel. Visit of the historical centre: Alexander Nevski Cathedral, the National Theatre, the Archaeological Museum, St.George Church, Boyana Church, Roman ruins and Medieval settlements. Overnight in Sofia.

Day 2: Sofia - Dragoman Marsh - Trigrad
 Breakfast. Today we will visit the biggest natural wetland by Sofia – Dragoman Marsh, and the Karst hills surrounding it. The marsh is just 40km westwards from Sofia, situated along the Via Aristotelis migratory route. After lunch we will continue with Besaparski Hills. From there we enter the heart of Rodopi Mountains, where we stay overnight in Trigrad.

Day 3: Trigrad
Breakfast. Our first hiking trek across the Rhodopes follows a picturesque nature trail along the valley of the Devinska River. A short transfer takes us to the entry of the Yagodinska Cave, one of Bulgaria’s longest and prettiest caves. Overnight in Trigrad.

Day 4: Trigrad
Breakfast. Hiking tour around Trigrad, with the authentic village of Zhrebevo at its distant end. Legend has it, the village was named after a stallion which shielded it from trouble and strife. Along the route, we will have the chance to see the Trigradsko Zhdrelo Gorge and the Dyavolskoto Gyrlo (The Devil's Throat) Cave, housing the highest underground waterfall on the Balkans. Overnight in Trigrad.

Day 5: Trigrad – Pamporovo – Smolyan
Breakfast. Continue with Pamporovo, where we will have walk to Snejanka tower for a breath-taking panorama view. Free time for coffee there and continue to Smolyan. City tour including the Art gallery, the Ali-bey konak, the Pangalov house and the Mednikar bazaar. Overnight in Smolyan.

Day 6: Smolyan – Madzharovo - Burgas
Early breakfast and continue to the village of Madzharovo and Sakar Mountains – the place with the biggest concentration of breeding Imperial Eagles in Bulgaria. We will try on several spots to locate them as we move eastwards to the Southern Black Sea coast and the town of Bourgas, where we stay for the night.

Day 7:Burgas - Kavarna
After breakfast we will go for birdwatching around the Atanasovsko Lake. Then we head northwards, making a short stop in a nice oak forest – a superb place for woodpeckers. In the afternoon we will arrive at the Cape Kaliakra. We will visit the Fortress and have some free time to enjoy the beautiful view. Overnight in Kavarna.

Day 8: Kavarna – Durankulak – Silistra
After breakfast we will continue our way to the north. Visit the Tyulenovo and Kamen Bryag, characterized with their multiple caves and rocky bays, surrounded by stone blocks and greenery. We will visit also the Durankulak Lake – world-famous place in winter, when thousands of Red-breasted Geese concentrate here. We will make a circle around the lake and continue Silistra.

Day 8: Silistra – Veliko Turnovo
Breakfast. More birdwatching around the Srebarna Lake and after that continue to Veliko Tyrnovo – the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire. City tour including the old town, the Tsarevets Fortress and the Samovodska Chershia. Overnight in Veliko Turnovo.

Day 9: Veliko Turnovo – Sofia
Breakfast. Transfer to Sofia airport for departure. End of our services.
